Wind Turbines

We work alongside and environmental management company called Aardvark Environmental to produce a comprehensive service for the preparation of planning applications for wind energy schemes and have completed a number of projects across the south west. Aardvark manage elements such as surveys for ecology, archaeology, noise and deal with the planning issues, while Swan Paul provide specialist landscape and visual inputs such as impact analysis, mitigation plans, vegetation surveys, expert witness at planning appeals and landscape and visual amenity reports. Lawhitton turbine is in Cornwall and is currently going through the planning process.

Durleigh Gardens

Working with the architects and developer on this newbuild scheme we provided design services for the external spaces, gardens and variety of open spaces to cater for a range of community needs. a public open space along Durleigh Brook is a flexible and seasonal landscape providing opportunities for leisure activities as well as recognising the need to accommodate sustainable urban drainage feature.

Penns Mount

Working closely with the wider Design Team to overcome the site constraints and turn them into opportunities on this newbuild scheme we provided design services for external spaces, gardens, a central open space with play features and bespoke design solutions. The public open space area within the centre of the site is the main focal point of the scheme with the landscaped links to adjoining sites. The existing trees, hedgerows and landscaped areas throughout the site are maintained and provide visual breaks to the development.

Acorn Lodge School, Barnstaple

Swan Paul were appointed to create an overall masterplan for the integration of new and old buildings into a coherent ‘campus style’ setting on part of the school site. The commission included the creation of meeting and sitting spaces, new paving areas, circulation routes and street furniture. The budget was approximately £250,000.

Somerton Recreation Ground

Swan Paul have been involved with the re-design and improvement of Somerton Recreation Ground; first with the Town Council and more laterly with a local managment trust. The proposals have evolved over time to allow for the many user groups of the park and to allow for drawings, proposals and costing to be used for funding bids. This has been an adaptive process and more recent additions have been land gifted to the park by the developer of some adjacent land.

Red Garden

In Taunton we have recently completed external spaces for Musgrove Red Garden on behalf of Taunton and Somerset NHS Trust. A carefully chosen palette of red flowers and foliage plants compliments the red details woven in the furniture and edging. A cinquain poem was incorporated within the edging of the newly created planting bed.

Chantry House Dementia Care

Sites have been developed in Taunton, Frome and Yeovil where we have developed theraputic gardens for a number of the Trusts’ dementia care units. Each has been carefully developed to provide respite and ‘memory links’ with the gardens and homes that people used to live in and tend. Features are therefore deliberately domestic in feel with opportunities for sensory stimulation such as texture, scent and colour. This project is in Frome and builds on the remnants of an old garden space that included a number of concrete ring planters that were too costly to remove.

Tangier Central

Tangier is an office development in Taunton, Somerset which underwent a refurbishment for the owners following a period of under occupation.  Working alongside the architects Swan Paul prepared design for the transformation of the external spaces to create a contemporary and inviting setting for the refurbished building.

Our Practice at Swan Paul

Taunton Brewhouse

We were commissioned by Taunton Deane Borough Council to design the external public realm for the conversion of this building to a theatre. Our work included public circulation spaces, a riverside walk and small play area which was themed on the concept of a birds nest in steam bent oak.

St Margarets Hospice

We have worked on a number of sites for St Margaret’s Hospice providing external and garden design services for sites at Yeovil and Taunton where we have provided delightful garden spaces for residents and their visitors to enjoy.  Budgets for each of the gardens were in the region of £200,000 and were completed as part of the building contracts for the new hospice developments.
